Your monthly dump (of info on concerts happening in the area, Nov. 2022)
Featuring Machine Head, Los Tigres de Norte and a line up of Fresno's best psych rock.
Here’s a new feature I’ll be adding to Bandgeeek each month. Or not, depending on whether I have the sense to remember in 30 or whatever days.
It’s a semi curated, and somewhat, but not entirely comprehensive list of the concerts happening in the Fresno area. Not that you all don’t know, or can’t find this all out yourselves, but it’s not to have it in one place.
Stoneshiver kicks off a short run of tour dates with a performance Nov. 2 at the Selma’s Arts Center. The Stereo Hopeful and RockOn! open. Tune in to tonight’s Homegrown show (8 p.m., Newrock 104.1) to hear all about it.
Israel Flores of Macondo is doing a solo acoustic performance, Nov. 3 at BarrelHouse Visalia. This is a bit of self promotion, because Flores has asked me to perform a few songs. This will be my first time performing live as New Old Man.
Machine Head’s Electric Happy Hour tour was much hyped when it was originally announced at Fulton 55. The show has since been moved to Strummer’s. Original tickets will be honored. Show happens Nov. 3.
While not technically a “concert,” Andrew Callaghan’s Channel 5 Live tour stop (Nov. 5 at Strummer’s) is still worth a mention, especially because they added a second show due to its popularity.
Also on Nov. 5, the post hard-core band Movements (which were on the lineup for the We Are Young Fest) will play Tioga Sequoia. It’s nice to see this kind of mid-level tour coming to the beer garden.
It’s not often you get to see first-wave American punk bands touring around anymore, but here we are. Cheetah Chrome’s Dead Boys (of “Sonic Reducer” fame) plays Nov. 8 at Fulton 55 with the Briefs and Suzi Moon.
Los Tigres del Norte has been doing its thing for 50 years and have played a lot in Fresno (and the Fresno area, more broadly). I saw them in 2017 at Pueblo Fest. After a pandemic hiatus, the band is back for its Reunion tour, which stops Nov. 11 at the Saroyan Theatre.
The Japanese experimental noise band Melt-Banana was supposed to play its North American tour at the start of 2022. That got postponed. The “re-boot tour USA,” stops at Strummer’s Nov. 13 with Ed Schrader’s Music Beat, Deaf Club and Psychic Graveyard.
I could run you through the history and overall popularity of Banda Sinaloense MS de Sergio Lizárraga, or Banda MS. The 13-person band is one of, if not the premiere regional Mexican acts (like, in he world). The fact that the band is booking arena-level performances should tell you everything you need to know. Banda MS returns to the Save Mart Center Nov. 19.
Destructive Productions is hosting Vol. 7 of its annual Fresno Punk Invasion, Nov. 18-20. This year the event features N8NoFace, TV Tragedy, No Consent, Dead City, Armamento Fatal and be a tie in with the Fresno Punk Rock SwapMeet. The event happens at the Destructive Warehouse, 160 M St.
Here is your pick for Thanksgiving weekend, hands down. Strange Vine headlines a killer lineup of psychadelic blues rock with Dying Suns, Sun Umbra and Daze Baby. It will be fuzzy and loud, moody and bopping. As a showcase of the area’s scene right now, this is it. The show happens Nov. 26 at Strummer’s.
Your other pick for turkey day weekend is Vince Warner’s annual Sunday after Thanksgiving concert extravaganza (Nov. 27 at Fulton 55). This year, the concert’s theme is “Smile, a tribute to the 70s.” I would expect someone will be playing a Bread song or two. The concert will his special resonance this year following the death of Warner’s friend and collaborator Ben Sondheim.
Here’s a few more shows worth note:
