What if Black Flag covered Limp Bizkit's 'Break Stuff?'
Plus, concert news and your weekly calendar list.
Last month, Anthony Dugan asked (and also answered) a question we never knew needed asking.
What would Limp Bizkit’s 1999 hit “Break Stuff” sound like if it was played by Black Flag?
“Growing up, I never got into nu-metal, and especially as I got older, I thought it was kinda dumb. Lately though, I’ve been realizing that A.) Limp Bizkit’s not meant to be taken that seriously, B.) and some of their songs are really good,” Dugan says.
The idea to play “what if” with the song came to Dugan while watching video of Limp Bizkit playing “Break Stuff” during its set at Lollapalooza this year.
“The lyrics reminded me of something that Black Flag would write,” he says.
Black Flag is one of his favorite bands, but he can admit lyrical it can sometimes feel like they’re making a big deal out of something little (i.e. “Slip It In”). “Break Stuff” has that same feeling, Dugan says, only Limp Bizkit seems a little more self-aware.
“I feel like a lot of people around my age got introduced to heavier music via nu-metal; I imaging that there’s a bunch of people that got into music like Black Flag because of bands like Limp Bizkit, so I thought that putting them together would be a fun way to highlight that.”
The song, and accompanying video, was posted to Youtube (and picked up by Behind the Scenes and also Reddit). It works pretty well and is a fun three minutes.
It’s obviously Limp Bizkit to anyone who has heard “Break Stuff,” or at least the “he said, she said” refrain. But it also has all the Black Flag bits; the angsty Rollins-esque screams (as opposed Fred Durst ones), the driving bass intro and noisey guitar breaks.
“I’m really surprised by the reaction,” Dugan says.
“Black Flag’s audience can be a little … intense and I was afraid that there’d be a lot of people nitpicking the song or thinking that I was being disrespectful or something, but yeah, most people have been really cool.”
When he’s not making music, Dugan hosts the Thursday Night open mic at Mystic Music.
Willie Nelson cancels Save Mart Center show; Faith No More replaced by Korn
A couple bits of concert news this week.
The Save Mart Center announced on Saturday that Willie Nelson has canceled his Oct. 20 date at the area; citing a schedule conflict. There are those who claim “schedule conflict” is what touring acts say when they can’t sell enough tickets, but Nelson has a solid audience in the area and the bill should be solid with the addition of The Avett Brothers as openers, so I’ll take it at face value.
The show was one of two slotted between stops on the Outlaw Music Festival. Nelson still plays Oct. 21 at the Santa Barbara Bowl with Lucinda Williams.
Tickets purchased through Ticketmaster will be refunded automatically. Those bough at arena can be refunded during business hours (noon to 5 p.m. Monday-Wednesday).
Also announced this week; Faith No More has pulled itself from its West Coast tour opening for System of a Down. So, Korn will now open the show, along with Russian Circles, when the tour stops at the Save Mart Center Oct. 16.
The change came after Faith No More cancelled all of its West Coast tour dates, citing the mental health of frontman vocalist Mike Patton.
