Stoneshiver previews new single, 'Cleopatra.' Hear it on Newrock 104.1
Plus, Mystic Music and Repair + Goldstein's team up for a beer drinking guitar night.
Stoneshiver spent the last 12 months working up material for a new album and we’re finally getting a first listen.
“Showdown,” is the band’s first new work in three years and its first done in collaboration with guest artists.
“For the first time we’ve brought along some friends to be featured artists on a few of the tracks,” says drummer Phillip Hernandez.
That includes ex-Zebrahead singer/guitarist Justin Mauriello, who handles vocal duties on the band’s first single “Cleopatra,” which debuts Sunday night (8:10 p.m.) on the Homegrown show on NewRock 104.1.
Starting Wednesday, the song will be available at newrock104.1fm as the Discover and Download song of the week.
“We’ve played shows with Justin in the past and as this song was coming together it just made perfect sense to send him the invitation to get in on the good times,” Hernandez says.
The song is poppier perhaps than what the band has delivered in the past, especially in the hook and chorus. But it retains enough guitar chug to keep it classified at the harder end of the “rock” spectrum and will satisfy longtime Stoneshiver listeners.
All in all, it’s good three-minute rock-radio fodder.
Mauriello’s current projects include I Hate Kate, Darling Thieves, and Olympic Crush.
Mystic Music + Goldstein’s = guitar night
Tom Walzem’s Mystic Music and Repair has never been a shop just about the retail. Sure there are the guitars on the wall (for sale) and stacks of vintage amps laid out all around the place and if you need to get something fixed — a bad input jack or new tubes — Walzem is the guy.
He’s also good if you want to futz around with weird vintage pedals and the like.
But the place is also about building community.
To that end, Mystic Music has teamed up with Goldstein’s Mortuary and Delicatessen for Guitar Night, 7-9 p.m. each Monday.
Think of it like an industry night for guitar players. You can get guitar strings changed for $20 and get $1 off beer while you wait. Walzem will also do free consultations and general appraisals, and also just talk guitars and maybe go in for a jam (though isn’t an open mic and acoustic guitars are encouraged).
You can check out Mystic Music and Repair from 1-6 p.m. at 1822 Van Ness avenue in downtown.
That’s it for this week. If you have anything you think I need to be looking at or listening to, feel free to let me know: jtehee@gmail.com
