New music: JD McClures' Dead Monster Galaxy
Plus, fundraising for the King Daweed Music Festival.
Dead Monster Galaxy is the solo project from shredder/guitar nerd JD McClure (totally using nerd in the positive here, FYI), a guy who created (or co-created) any number of local bands (the Mishaps, Aftermath, Crack Jenny’s Teacup).
McClure bills DMG as heavy guitar music, which says what it needs without deep diving into any sub-sub-sub genre specifics.
Anyway, it’s METAL as the Fresnan would say.
McClure released a debut EP in 2020 and followed that up with the single “Projection Unkind,” which dropped across platforms last week.
The track is a collaboration with vocalist R.H. McClurg, who is a retired movie special FX guy and a makeup artist and art director with his own solo metal project in Las Vegas.
“Rob and I met on Facebook, where he reached out to me sharing interest in my musical abilities and experience,” McClure says.
“We have some common interests such as the band Death, music production and our nearly shared last names.”
Side note: McClurg and his wife Kristi did the cover art for the single. It’s a sort of homage to the Tree House of Horror episodes from The Simpsons.
“Projection Unkind,” is available as a compact disk single over at Bandcamp.
You can help make the King Daweed Music Festival happen
Javon Davis, aka King Daweed, is pushing hard on year two of the King Daweed Music Festival.
The first King Daweed Music Festival happened in October at Full Circle Brewing Company and was headlined by Davis’ band King Daweed Scars and Stripes with a large contingent of locals including rappers Fashawn, Omar Aura, Ottis Reed and McWicks.
This year’s festival happens May 28 at the Granite Park Sports Complex and will feature a dozen acts, from what sounds like across genres. Davis is also in the midst of fundraising for the event, both on Facebook and GoFundMe.
On Monday, the UK webcast ClusterView posted its second interview with Davis, who covers a wide range of topics (including music) in the hour-plus long video chat.
That’s it for this week. Remember you can now hear me on the Homegrown Show Sundays at 8 p.m. on New Rock 104.1 FM. If you have anything you think I need to be looking at or listening to, feel free to let me know: jtehee@gmail.com
