Bandgeeeek + New 104.1 team up for Homegrown show
Plus, an album drop from Mantis Watch and a weekly events list
Those who listen to New Rock 104.1 on Sunday nights may have noticed that I’ve been guesting on the Homegrown show for a few weeks.
It’s not just because I keep randomly stumbling into their downtown studio on show nights.
As the name implies, Homegrown is the station’s 1-hour locals-only showcase, where it debuts a lot of new music from the area, hosts featured bands and does its part to all-around cheerlead for the local music scene.
The show has been on air since the days when bands had to drops off demos in person (on CDs or in some cases CDRs no doubt) and has a number of hosts in that time, most recently, the station’s director of programming Jason Squires, aka Hammer.
I’ll be taking over next week.
This is a partnership of sorts and a definite extension of what I do here with Bandgeeeek. Those who follow both will likely see the overlap, which is somewhat by design. I hope to expand the show’s reach while getting on to new, emerging talent.
What to know: Bands can submit to me directly, or through the station at this link.
The Homegrown Show airs 8 p.m. Sundays online or at 104.1 FM.
Mantis Watch has new releases up the wazoo
Mantis Watch seems to be teasing something new every day now.
First, it was this weird and also totally catchy diss track, “(We Stole Our) Beach Front Property (From the Tommy Bahama Boys),” which aside from the awesome double parenthetical title also manages to reference Nicki Minaj’s cousin’s friend’s swollen testicles.
Side note: Check out Tommy Bahama Boys.
Then, it was “You and Me,” a deep-cut cover for a Danzig/Samhain/Misfits tribute album. The song was original performed by Glen Danzig and the Power and Fury Orchestra for the “Less than Zero” soundtrack.
The fact that someone else knows this makes me happy.
Also, the band’s song “High School Psychopath (In Space),” will be on the “3 Chords of Death” compilation, which drops next week on RTTB Records (that’s Ramone to the Bone).
But the big deal tease is the band’s new full length album “Channel 101,” out now on Outloud! Records. This is an actual album release, in that you can buy the thing on compact disk (in cardboard or jewel case) or on 12” black vinyl.
The album is 14 songs of Ramonescore that clocks in at under 15 minutes, including the sub-15 second track “Bomb Inside My Brain.” For fans of: Ramones (obviously), Lillingtons, Teenage Bottlerocket, The Riverdales, The Sunnydales, etc.
